Traditional and Prescribed Burn Spring 2024Advance Notice

The City of Toronto in collaboration with Indigenous Land Stewardship Circle (ILSC) is once again preparing for the annual traditional and prescribed burn program this spring in High Park. Here is the advanced burn notice. The map on the notice identifies the locations in the park scheduled to be burned in late March or April.

The exact timing of the burn is highly dependent on weather conditions and is difficult to predict in advance. The weather will be closely monitored and when a date has been selected, a confirmation notice will be issued 24-48 hours prior to ignition.

Prior to European settlement, controlled burns were used by Indigenous Peoples to manage and maintain this fire-dependent ecosystem. Fire-dependant ecosystems like black oak savannahs, contain prairie plants that respond positively to prescribed burning and grow more vigorously than they would in the absence of fire.
