Traditional and Prescribed BurnSpring 2026 Advance Notice

A traditional and prescribed burn will be held in High Park in early spring 2026. This burn is part of an ongoing practice to manage and care for the land, specifically aimed at restoring the Black Oak Savannah ecosystem. When the weather conditions are ideal, a burn date will be selected, and an updated notice will be posted in the park and on the City’s website and social media at least 24 hours in advance of the burn.

The prescribed burn is called “traditional” to honor Indigenous practices on Turtle Island. It is named Biinaakzigewok Anishnaabeg, meaning “responsibility a cleansing fire by all Native Peoples” in Anishinaabemowin.

See the burn notice for more details.
